SBACS Christian College Scholarship Program description
College participation form
Twenty percent…I am told that is the number of Christian families who send their children to a Christian college or university. Many of the other 80% arrive on a secular campus with a high school diploma and an elementary faith. They have received minimal spiritual training from home, church and school leading up to college. I believe it is critical that we give our children a Kingdom education-a kindergarten through college, Christian education!
Dr. Bob Agee and I have formed a good working partnership between the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools and the Southern Baptist Association of Christian Schools. Last summer I attended the ASBCS meeting in Branson and the ASBAP meeting at Ouachita Baptist University. I heard presidents and admissions officers speak of recruiting expenses, buying name lists, advertising and other strategies to secure a solid enrollment.
SBACS member schools are a great source of the students you are spending money to find and recruit! Moreover, SBACS students and parents are already acculturated to essential Christian college practices such as tuition payments, annual giving, spiritual training, conduct codes and volunteerism. We want many more students who attend our SBACS schools to choose a Southern Baptist college or university.
To help you recruit these students, we created the B.R. Chamberlain Foundation--Outstanding SBACS Scholars Award Program. Through this program we are identifying and seeking to reward the brightest and best students who attend our member schools. I have enclosed a preliminary list of the students who will make up this year's finalists. All these students have already scored at or above 1250 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT and have a 3.5 GPA. Most are from Christian families who made the decision to seek a Christian school for their children through grade twelve. These are your kind of families and students!
I hope that you will personally pursue these students for your college or university. They are the leaders from our schools and likely will be the leaders wherever they decide to enroll for college. It is my desire for us to work together over the next few years to see the number of students attending our Southern Baptist colleges and universities increase dramatically. When that happens, you will get a collateral benefit of stronger support from pastors and their churches.
This list will grow each year as more of our schools take part. We plan to give you this list every fall (you will get it earlier next year), believing that in time we will see more of our students getting a Christian college degree. There is no charge for this service. We just ask that you consider making a gift to support SBACS and its mission.
We have also enclosed a valuable list of our Southern Baptist high schools that graduate seniors to help you contact them about their other college-bound students. To make it easier, we will email you an Excel version of the student list and the list of schools with addresses, guidance counselor phone numbers and emails. Just complete the enclosed response page and return it to us, showing the email address of the person to whom you want the lists sent. Again, our mission is to help increase the number of students attending Christian colleges and universities.
I believe an aggressive, purpose-driven plan will increase the number of Christian families who enroll students in Christian colleges, which will pay priceless spiritual dividends in the years ahead. Let's work on making it 30%, then 50%, then 80%!Imagine the impact on our culture if 80% of our children graduated from strong, faithful Christian colleges!
Please read over the enclosed material on the B.R. Chamberlain Foundation--Outstanding SBACS Scholars Award Program. We would appreciate any suggestions you have for making this a better program.
Gratefully yours in Christ,
Edward E. Gamble
PS…Your gift of support for SBACS tells our member schools that you are interested in their students and in helping advance their ministries. Thank you for considering a gift to SBACS. You can use the enclosed form to make your gift.
PPS…We have already linked all our Southern Baptist colleges to our website to help our member schools find you.
He…established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. Psalm 78:5-7
These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Deut. 6: 6-7
